A quick overview — Resources

While much informal literacy learning (in the new literacies) is taking place outside of the classroom, traditional print and paper-based learning in the classroom is not engaging early school leavers.

Our research has found that students’ home literacies such as SMS texting, messaging, Internet usage and computer games are generally not valued or used in the classroom.  Significantly, youth appear to engage with ease in the functional and cultural aspects of the new literacies, however they do so uncritically.

“If you intend to incorporate new literacies into your classroom practice it is essential that you familiarise yourself with the risks.”

We hope that education professionals will find these resources useful, and that teachers will offer feedback on how they fared in the classroom.

We also invite you to contribute your own ideas so that the resource can grow over time.
